colposcopy

colposcopy

During colposcopy, the cervix and vagina are visually examined using a magnifying lens. This allows for the visual identification of abnormal cells. Biopsies of abnormal cells will be performed. This allows the pathologist to make a more definitive evaluation of the abnormality, and allows the pathologist to evaluate a larger number of cells than is possible with a Pap test.

The procedure is performed in the office, and is similar to the Pap test. The procedure takes 10 to15 minutes to perform. When biopsies of the cervix are performed, you will experience a small amount of cramping, which will be minimized by taking 600 mg of Ibuprofen (Advil) one hour before your scheduled appointment.

Further treatment of any abnormal cells will be individualized based upon results of the colposcopy. Possible treatments include performing another Pap in 4 to 6 months, performing a LEEP, or performing a cone biopsy.
