cone biopsy Like the LEEP procedure, a cone biopsy is designed to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. A cone biopsy is performed in the operating room, under anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure. The abnormal cells are surgically removed from the cervix. This procedure is preferred over the LEEP procedure in two specific situations. The first situation is when cells inside the canal of the cervix are abnormal. The second situation is when cervical cancer is suspected. A cone biopsy is designed to provide cleanly cut tissue edges for evaluation by the pathologist. This allows the pathologist to better evaluate the extent to which cancer spread may have occurred. [ return to the top ] |
