Leep Procedure

The LEEP (Loop electro surgical excision procedure) is designed to remove all abnormal cells from the cervix, thus allowing normal cells to regenerate.

Dr. Evans performs the LEEP procedure in the outpatient center at the Christ Hospital, as the hospital provides the specialized equipment that is needed.

The LEEP is performed much like a colposcopy. A speculum will be placed and local anesthetic will be given. The anesthetic contains epinephrine/adrenaline, and will make your heart beat quickly for a few minutes. The epinephrine helps to decrease bleeding during the procedure. Dr. Evans will place vinegar on your cervix, which allows visualization of the abnormal cells. Then a small fine wire shaped like a half circle will be utilized to gently remove the abnormal cells from the cervix. The wire works by utilizing high frequency electrical current, making the procedure quick and very well tolerated.
